THIS PROGRAM IS CURRENTLY UNDER RESTRUCTURING

Our Program is based on the following areas:

1. Foundation skills needed for basic social interaction

a. Ability to maintain eye contact
b. Maintain appropriate personal space
c. Understand gestures and facial expressions

2. Interaction skills needed to interact with others

a. Resolving conflicts
b. Taking turns
c. Learning how to begin and end conversations
d. Determine appropriate topics of conversation
e. Interacting with authority figures

3. Affective skills needed for understanding oneself and others

a. Identifying one’s feelings
b. Recognizing the feelings of others
c. Demonstrating empathy
d. Decoding body language and facial expressions
e. Determining whether someone is trustworthy

4. Cognitive skills needed to maintain more complex social interactions

a. Social perception
b. Making choices
c. Self-monitoring
d. Understanding community norms
e. Determining appropriate social behavior for different social situations

Activities Locations

The activities facilitated by Independent Steps Community based integration After School program will take in the multiple local facilities including:

  • The Parks; for a picnic, including outdoor activities such as games, light hiking, and others.
  • A day at the beach
  • Sporting events
  • Music Concerts
  • Amusement Parks
  • Theaters
  • Museums
  • Fairs and Local events
  • Library
  • Shopping center
  • Local restaurants
  • Volunteer opportunities such as the Community garden near USC
  • Others

(Independent Steps will be responsible for providing and coordinating Mobility to and from each activity)

Activities will be adjusted according to specific age and physical capabilities. After school program will be provided at designated locations that will include indoor and outdoor facilities.
